Breaker Breaker, anybody out there got a copy? Ah yes, remember the days of CB Radio, a once fantastic hobby for both young and not so young, CB preceeded the mobile phone and the internet and offered everybody the freedom to communicate with other CB'ers in their community, their county and even farther afield all for FREE, thats right, all you needed was a basic CB radio and antenna (aerial) for your home or car and you were "on the air" there were no monthly top up charges, no bi-monthly bills and no worries of heating up your brain due to microwave signals penetrating your skull.
CB radio was the younger brother if you like of Ham radio (amateur radio) and most hams got their feet wet on CB before continuing their interest in the hobby and getting their amateur licence. Amateur radio is the next step up from CB radio but as this article is relating to CB I will refrain from complicating things.
CB is a simple hobby with very little technical knowledge required, it requires no licence, there are no exams to pass and you can be on air within minutes of buying your first radio. The hobby reached its peak during the late 70's and early 80's with such films as Smokey & the Bandit and Convoy.
The purpose of this article is not to try and give CB a second lease of life like some outdated hobby or fad that has died off... No, because CB never actually went away! Surprised? Well from time to time you may have noticed cars and vans on your travels sporting funny looking long aerials on their roofs, well chances are these were CB aerials.
There are a large number of well seasoned CB operators up and down the country who are very active on the radio, there are several operators in Navan, Crossakiel, Clonmellon and Cavan to name but a few. The hobby is capturing the attention of new operators also. As I mentioned there is little or no technical knowledge required to get started on CB.
Interested in getting into CB and wondering where to buy a radio then look no further than Scorpion Technology in Crossakiel http://www.scorpiontechnology.ie who have been selling CB radio and accessories since 2007. The staff at Scorpion are very well informed in every aspect of CB radio and can assist you in choosing the right radio for you. For more information on this fascinating hobby just ask
